Top GOPers take default off table: Geithner
WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner expressed confidence that Congress would raise the debt ceiling and said on Monday that top Republicans had taken “default off the table.”
Talk about going out on a limb. First of all, Geithner risks some backlash from the GOP for revealing a position they have not assumed publicly. Secondly, if there is a default, or negotiations in some way do not proceed as predicted by Geithner, it will again encourage speculation about just who the “senior Republicans” are. Is Boehner in charge, or Cantor? Is McConnell calling the shots for the “hardliners”, or is it Bachmann behind the scenes?
